NCRB’s Crime in India 2016- Statistics released today

The much-awaited Report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Ministry of Home Affairs was finally released on 30 November 2017. NCRB has been publishing the crime statistics since 1953. The Report 2016 starts with Message by Home Secretary; Message by Director General BPR&D and a Foreword by Director, NCRB.

For the first time, a separate record of Metropolitan cities has been included. Data pertaining to only 19 Metropolitan Cities which have crossed the population of 2 million (20 lakhs) is being published. The Report states that 53 Metropolitan Cities have the population of 1 million (10 lakh) or more as per Population Census, 2011. So the data for remaining 34 Metropolitan Cities would, however, be available on NCRB Website.

The Report consists of more than 40  Chapters, for States/ UTs and separate for Metropolitan cities. A preliminary look at the Report shows that more data has been included this year. In accordance with Hon’ble Supreme Court direction vide Writ Petition (Civil) No.75 of 2012 dated 17.01.2013, a new chapter on Missing Persons & Children has been included.
